LENTEN STUDY

The Freedom of a Christian 1520This year we will explore Martin Luther’s famous writing from November 1520, The Freedom of a Christian (Latin: “De Libertate Christiana”; German: “Von der Freiheit eines Christenmenschen”).

Luther was not shy about sharing his faithful thoughts. Even though what he was sharing was an honest interpretation of the Bible and theology, controversy grew. He was instructed to write a reconciliation-minded letter to Pope Leo X (1475–1521). He appended a nonpolemical tract to that letter describing the heart of his beliefs.

It is here that he developed the concept that as fully forgiven children of God, Christians are no longer compelled to keep God’s law to obtain salvation; however, they freely and willingly serve God and their neighbors. He also further develops the concept of justification by faith. In the treatise, Luther stated, “A Christian is a perfectly free lord of all, subject to none. A Christian is a perfectly dutiful servant of all, subject to all.” These words of Luther still speak to the church today. Are we faithfully using the freedom that we have for God’s purpose in the world?
