1 Timothy 6:10 reminds us that the love of money is the root of all kinds of evil and no church should underestimate the lure and temptation that cash brings with it. We just need to “like” money enough to pay the bills and fund our church’s mission.
The treasurer’s role is about mission as much as it is about collecting the money, paying the bills and dealing with the bank. The role also includes completing the bookkeeping and preparing monthly financial statements for the Council, handling Grace’s payroll, submitting donations to the Synod, and ensuring all required payroll and charity reports are filed on time with the government.
The treasurer also acts as a financial advisor to the Council in areas such as budget preparation, contract negotiation and mission alternatives. The treasurer also should tell the fiscal story to the congregation.
In my time as treasurer, one of my goals has been to explain the numbers in a way that non-financial people will understand.
I’m honoured to serve as your treasurer and feel blessed with the trust that the church leadership has given me.
